Intro to the SNBRA

The Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve Association (SNBRA) was incorporated in March 2000, and is a non-profit organization of volunteers from different sectors including: academe, government, industry, non-governmental organizations and community members.

After a great deal of fact-finding and research, this volunteer group developed a nomination document, and this document was submitted for formal nomination to UNESCO on July 31, 2001.

In September 2001, the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve Association received confirmation that the application had been accepted. Between September 2001 and July 2004,the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve Association (SNBRA) has developed a balanced governance structure to allow representation from government, industry, academic institutions and the non-governmental organizations (NGO).  In the same time frame, SNBRA hosted a buffer worskshop to establish a set of principles for sustainable land use management in the working landscape adjacent to the "core" area.  SNBRA has also conducted a consensus building process with all of the municipalities in Southwest Nova Scotia.
